Free calculator for tile, LVP, plank, and carpet. Pattern-aware waste, box counts, grout estimation, and a complete supply list.
Open calculator →The basic formula for any flooring project is simple: room area divided by tile or plank coverage, plus a waste buffer. Where most calculators stop is at that waste buffer — they apply a flat 10% regardless of what you're installing or how you're installing it. That's accurate for a simple straight grid layout, but it significantly underestimates material for diagonal and herringbone patterns, which create far more off-angle cuts at the perimeter. TileWise automatically applies the right waste factor — 10% for straight, 15% for diagonal, 20% for herringbone — based on your chosen layout pattern.
Box counts matter as much as tile counts. At the store, you buy boxes, not individual tiles. If you need 47 tiles and there are 8 per box, you need 6 boxes — not 5.875. TileWise always rounds up to the nearest full box and tells you the exact number to put in your cart. It also accounts for LVP and plank flooring, which is sold by box area (square feet per box) rather than by individual pieces.
Grout and thinset mortar quantities depend on tile size and joint width in ways that are easy to underestimate. Large-format tiles (18×18 or bigger) require larger trowel notches and more mortar per square foot. Small mosaic tiles with wide joints need substantially more grout than large tiles with tight joints. The calculator accounts for both variables so you don't make a separate trip back to the store.
The guides below cover the most common flooring questions: pattern-specific waste, LVP vs. tile selection, and room-by-room estimates.
Room-by-room tile counts for bathrooms, kitchens, and living spaces. Includes size charts for 12×12, 12×24, and 24×24 tiles.

Read guide →Straight lay needs 10% extra. Diagonal needs 15%. Herringbone needs 20%. We auto-set the right waste factor for your layout pattern — not a flat 10% for everything.
You buy boxes at the store, not individual tiles. Enter your tiles per box (or sq ft per box for planks) and get the exact number of boxes to put in your cart.
Not just tile count — also thinset mortar bags, grout bags (calibrated by tile size and joint width), spacers, leveling systems, and all the tools you'll need.
Tiling more than one room in the same material? Add up to 5 rooms and get a combined total — so you can order everything in one trip and ensure matching dye lots.
One tool for tile, LVP, laminate, hardwood planks, and carpet. Switch between material types without starting over.
Unlike Home Depot's or Lowe's calculators, TileWise is completely neutral. Enter any tile size, any box coverage, any price — you decide where to buy.
For a straight grid, add 10%. For brick offset, 10–12%. For diagonal, 15%. For herringbone, 20%. Complex patterns create more off-angle edge cuts and more waste. Always round up to the nearest full box to ensure matching dye lots.
Room area ÷ tile area = tile count, then add your waste percentage, then divide by tiles per box and round up. TileWise does all of this automatically — enter your room dimensions, tile size, layout pattern, and tiles per box.
LVP (luxury vinyl plank) is 100% waterproof — suitable for bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. Laminate has a wood-composite core that can swell when wet; it's not recommended in high-moisture areas. Both are click-lock systems and calculate similarly for box counts.
A 50 lb bag of thinset covers roughly 40–50 sq ft at a standard 3/16" trowel depth. Large-format tiles (12×24 or bigger) require larger notches, reducing yield to 30–40 sq ft per bag. TileWise calculates mortar bags for your specific tile size and area.
Grout coverage depends on tile size and joint width. A 25 lb bag covers roughly 200 sq ft for 12×12 tile at a 1/16" joint. Small mosaic tiles with wide joints need far more. TileWise calculates grout for your specific tile size and joint width.
Yes, if the existing tile is firmly bonded and level. Tiling over adds about 3/8" to floor height, which can affect door clearances and transitions. Remove any loose or cracked tiles first. The calculator works the same whether you're tiling over a subfloor or existing tile.
